SpeakIQ helps its clients set realistic communication
goals for themselves. Many companies consider attendance at
these seminars a component in performance evaluations.
This class is appropriate for advanced non-native
speakers who work with native speakers in professional settings.
These materials and activities in class provide rules, learning
strategies, and contextualized practice in the stress, rhythm,
and melody of English words and discourse—the features of pronunciation
that most affect intelligibility. Participants gain considerable
confidence from active class participation. Oral communication
skills are an intrinsic part of teamwork. These experiences
carry over when they give presentations and work in small groups.
Individualized practice of the sounds you need
to improve. Students are expected to work with the tapes outside
of class.
Editing of completed reports for publication
or oral presentation. Sometimes having another (trained!) pair
of eyes read over a document will provides the extra finesse
needed to project a polished impression.
These classes are focused on the most important
features of English. For example, being able to pronounce some
difficult sounds, such as the ‘th’ sounds /u/ and /D/ and the
‘dark l’ allophone [³], is not necessary for international intelligibility.
In grammar, omitting the third person singular present tense
‘-s’ marking, rarely leads to any misunderstandings or communication
problems.
Acting on these insights frees up valuable
time for learning more general language awareness and communication
strategies.
